GOLDEN GOOD GOVERNMENT LEAGUE

GOLDEN, COLORADO

History of the Organization

The Golden Good Government League (3GL) is a Political Committee, governed by a 14 person board drawn from across the community, which works to ensure high-quality government in Golden.  The PC group was formed in 1977 under the leadership of Ed Engler, the Golden Transcript Editor.  The Board actively seeks out qualified candidates for City Council positions, encourages them to run for office and supports them in their campaigns.  We also study the challenges facing local government and make recommendations on how to meet these challenges in what we perceive to be the best interests of the community.  Our goal is good government, not support of particular factions.

Over the years, the 3GL Board has generally taken the line that City Council is the best vehicle for fostering desired change in the community. We recognize that the initiative process is an important constitutional check on legislative bodies that have failed to govern properly but we do not think it is an effective mechanism for day to day governance or for changing the "tone" of local government.  Particularly we do not believe in capricious exercise of the process; for example, to create unnecessary and inappropriate changes to the city charter or to "punish" certain individuals in the government for personal reasons.  Of course, when citizens feel that their elected representatives are taking the city in an inappropriate direction, it is proper for those citizens to elect new representatives dedicated to a new direction and such actions have occurred in Golden on various occasions in recent years.

Before each election, the 3GL Board invites all candidates for office to meet with us to discuss their qualifications and positions on current issues.  We also thoroughly investigate the need for and impact of all ballot issues.  Following the discussions and investigation  we support those candidates we believe best qualified for the offices they seek and we take action to encourage either passage or rejection of ballot issues, as appropriate.
